Long Range Planning

The Long Range Planning Committee has concluded their meetings for the school year.

They have learned about areas of our district, reviewed and gave input on drafts of goals, action plans, and strategies thus far, and participated in surveys to gather data towards changing our Mission Statement.

This was our first attempt at collecting the ideas and feedback from multiple meetings and Thought Exchanges, and start to organize them under four main goal areas:

Goal Area 1: Student Achievement & Growth (curriculum & instruction)
Goal Area 2: Community
Goal Area 3: Resources (financial & facility-based)
Goal Area 4: Human Resources
New Area - addressing health & wellbeing

If you haven't already and would like to contribute, please use this link and take this survey to provide us with some critical feedback that will help shape our plans for the future of our district.

Thank you.

At the February meeting, we explored the responses from the most recent Thought Exchange. We had 618 participants, exploring 299 different thoughts, and interacting with those thoughts 14,052 times! Of the participants, 16% were staff members and 82% were parents/guardians. That is a great return and we have gained a lot of insight on various topics including curriculum, staff training, CTE (Career & Technical Education), early childhood offerings, communication and more. This feedback will continue to be considered throughout the process.

The Plan for 2022-2023:

Meetings are scheduled for Superintendent Fitzpatrick to talk with each of the school staff about plans, ideas and goals.

The Administrative Council will review and work on all goal area statements/ideas.

The Curriculum and Instruction Department will carefully review and update Goal 1.

The district's JEDI Council (Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion) will also work on each goal area with DEI goals and commitments in mind.

A workshop took place for the Board of Education to discuss and work on the LRP ideas thus far.

Next Meeting:

Our first two kick-off meetings for Long Range Planning were held on October 11 and 27, 2022.

In the first committee meeting held on October 11, members were provided presentations on District Demographics by a representative from Plante Moran Cresa, sharing the data from the Pupil Enrollment Projection Study Report for 2022-2026, originally presented to the Board of Education in January 2022.

Members of the Royal Oak Schools central office team shared Current Schools and Programs, Staffing trends and statistics, Finance, including how schools are funded, and a snapshot of our revenues and expenses.

The second meeting focused on the state of transportation in Royal Oak Schools and our safety plans and responses. Our major facility partners presented an overview of work to date and potential projects including building envelope (brick and mortar upkeep), roofing, pavement, mechanical systems, electrical systems, and architecture (flooring, doors, windows, ceilings, and kitchens).

At the November 30 meeting we began visioning and exploring options for students. Leaders of our Curriculum Department presented and groups worked on exploring topics such as DEI, International Baccalaureate, Career Planning and CTE, Technology Tools and Integration, Rigorous Curriculum, and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support. Mary Beth Fitzpatrick will also be meeting with high school students to get their perspectives on the future of the district, what has served them well, and what we should look forward to changing or updating for the next generation of students.

Going forward, we will circulate surveys, provide periodic updates and presentations at open school board meetings via video messages or emails, and conduct discussions and updates at other stakeholder gatherings such as PTA, Chamber of Commerce, and InterClub Council meetings, as allowed. You can expect to also hear from the district regularly through articles in our District Dispatch Newsletter, on our website, in community publications, and via social media.  If not already, please remember to like us and follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube. You can sign up to receive our District Dispatch newsletter by going to the district website www.royaloakschools.org and clicking on “Subscribe to eNews.”

The long-range planning process will be conducted throughout the 2022-23 school year and yield a strategic plan for the district by the end of the school year. If you wish to join our formal committee that will meet throughout the year, please contact the superintendent’s office at 248-435-8400, ext. 1228, or send an email to Paula Sutterfield, Executive Assistant to the Superintendent, at [email protected]

Together, we will be able to build a plan for our children, keeping the public schools at the heart of this amazing community.
